Packing Tips

  1. If you plan to do your own packing, start well in advance of your moving date. This avoids the last minute "packing rush".

  2. Label all your boxes according to the room you like them placed in. Example: kitchen, master bedroom, living room, etc)

  3. For long haul moves make sure you label all of your cartons with your name, destination, city and contact phone number.

  4. Pack all mirrors and pictures in cartons with proper padding around them.

  5. For long haul moves it is advisable to remove pedals from bikes and place them in a bike carton.

  6. Label one box "Set Up". In this box put all the screws, nuts and bolts and other pieces needed to put your furniture back together. Place each set of screws in a small bag with a label indicating which piece of furniture it was from. Some companies may suggest taping the bag to the furniture. The problem with this is that the tape may come loose and you'll loose your pieces or the tape is too strong and you peel off the finish on your furniture.

  7. Make sure all jars containing liquids have their lids tightly secured and taped. Place all secured jars in their own plastic bag before packing for added protection from leakage.

  8. Pack your mattress and box spring in mattress bags for protection from soiling.

  9. All lamps need to be packed in appropriate boxes. First remove the shade from the base, then pack them both separately. Light bulbs should ber removed and packed separately as well.

  10. Pack all heavy items such as books and records, etc. in small boxes, preferably the 2 cubic foot size.

  11. It is not necessary to empty dresser drawers of light clothes, but remove liquids, breakables, books, valuables, etc. All drawers that open like cupboards should be emptied. In special cases where you have difficult access, the dresser is very heavy or the dresser is fragile or an antique, it should be emptied completely.

  12. All boxes must be sealed with tape. This will prevent any items from falling out and allows your mover to stack them on top of each other.

  13. Pack all your boxes full, so it can hold the weight of another box on top of it.

  14. Mark all boxes containing breakables with a red marker, writing "fragile" on all four sides and the top.

  15. Pack heavy items at the bottom of the boxes.

  16. When packing dishes, cups or any breakables, remember to place a layer of crumpled paper at the bottom of the box and between each layer. Try to keep the weight of the box under 45 lbs. The heavier the item, the smaller the box.

  17. When packing plates, CDs or records, always place them standing vertically up in the box.

  18. Wrap all breakables with packing papaer, preferably several sheets on each item.

  19. Do not pack any flammable, corrosive or explosive materials in your cartons, i.e. matches, propane tanks, aerosols, paints and fuels. These items must be moved by you or disposed of.

  20. Mark "Do Not Load" an anything you don't want the movers to take and set them aside in a corner of a room or a designated area.

  21. Empty gasoline/diesel from lawn mowers and outboard motors.

  22. Tie or tape mops, brooms and shovels into a bundle.

  23. Do not pack cleaning products in the same box as your food. (No liquids, chemicals, outside plants, etc)

  24. Pack hanging clothes and drapes in wardrobe or wardrobe boxes.

  25. Carry currency, jewelery and valuable papers yourself. Movers will not take responsibility for these items, or any items of extraordinary value.
